An enlarged heart is one of the most common and dangerous, yet relatively unknown, symptoms of high blood pressure. Having uncontrolled hypertension for more than just a very short period almost inevitably leads to this condition. The reason is obvious: high blood pressure makes the heart work harder and, just like any muscle, it gets bigger with strenuous exercise.

An enlarged heart is extremly dangerous because it makes you much more susceptible to heart attack. Just like any other muscle, the heart can fail through exhaustion. Doctors call the condition “hypertensive heart disease”.

The good news is that high blood pressure, and its consequences, can be reversed. When blood pressure is reduced the load on the heart decreases the the muscle will shrink. This is one case where bigger is not better.
